Care & Cleaning

Vinyl Care & Cleaning Instructions

Body Support Systems uses, durable, supple vinyl coverings on its products. The bodyCushion™ should be covered with a sheet, towel, or fitted bodyCushion™ Cotton Covers to prevent contact with skin, oil, or lotion. Accumulations of oil or lotion over time will form a hard “lacquer” that will cause the vinyl to crack.

Day-to-Day Care & Light Cleaning:

Remove ordinary dirt and smudges with a mild soap and warm water solution. Dry with a soft, lint-free cloth or towel. For more difficult stains, use of a stronger detergent is recommended; however, follow the detergent manufacturer’s instructions closely.

Special cleaning problems:

The following steps are recommended to clean stains on Body Support Systems’ vinyl coverings. Many different stains can be removed when these cleaning agents are used in the following order.

Step 1 cleaners:

Nonabrasive household cleaners to be used with a soft cloth or damp sponge.

  • Formula 409® All-Purpuse Spray Cleaner
  • fantastik® Spray Cleaner
  • Other similar household cleaners and bleaches.

Rinse cleaned area with fresh water and dry with a clean cloth

Step 2 cleaners:

Solvent-type cleaner to be liberally applied with a soft cloth or damp sponge.

  • Rubbing alcohol (isopropyl alcohol)

Rinse cleaned area with fresh water and dry with a clean cloth.

Caution: Solvents can be highly flammable. Exercise proper care in cleaning, and notify personnel in area of danger. Wear rubber gloves during all cleaning activity. Solvents can seriously damage buttons, stitching and wooden or other decorative trim. Use caution when cleaning around bodyCushion™ stitching and VELCRO®.

Step 3 cleaners:

Strong, active solvent cleaners such as nail polish remover (acetone/water) to be applied with a soft cloth or damp sponge. Stains should be removed with less than six (6) rubs; if stain persists after six rubs, contact manufacturer. Rinse cleaned area with fresh water and dry with a clean cloth.

Caution: these solvents are highly flammable. Exercise proper care in cleaning, and notify personnel in area of danger. Wear rubber gloves during all cleaning activity. These solvents can seriously damage buttons, stitching and wooden or other decorative trim. Use caution when cleaning around bodyCushion™ stitching and VELCRO®

Never use harsh solvents or cleaners which are intended for industrial applications. To clean stained or soiled areas, a soft white cloth is recommended. Avoid use of paper towels. Paper towels are often made from recycled materials and contain particles such as ink which can contaminate the cleaning process. Therefore, a soft white cloth is recommended.

Suggested Methods for Cleaning Old, Sticky Vinyl:

Please note: The cleaning methods below are based on feedback from our customers and are not guaranteed to clean your sticky vinyl. We highly recommend testing your desired cleaning method on an inconspicuous spot first before applying any cleaning product to all of the vinyl. We also recommend trying method #1 or #2 first, as these methods are more gentle on the vinyl than method #3.

1 - Remove the foam cushions from the vinyl covers. Soak vinyl covers in a solution of Ecos laundry detergent and water overnight. Scrub the next day with a clean cotton rag. Rinse thoroughly with warm water and air dry.

2 - Remove the foam cushions from the vinyl covers. Using a soft cotton rag, scrub the vinyl covers with a solution of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) and water. Rinse thoroughly with warm water and air dry.

3 - Please note: This method may cause the vinyl to become brittle or crack over time. If that is not a concern because your sticky vinyl is unusable as it is, then you might try this method. Only attempt this method outside or in a well ventilated area, as it may produce very strong odors. Remove the foam cushions from the vinyl covers. Using a clean cotton rag, quickly rub the vinyl with isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol). The stickiness may come off of the vinyl as an oily substance. After the stickiness is removed by the rubbing alcohol, wash the vinyl covers in a solution of warm water and Dawn dish detergent. Rinse thoroughly in warm water and air dry.

If the suggested cleaning methods above do not thoroughly clean your sticky vinyl, we sell replacement parts to extend the lifecycle of each bodyCushion™. We offer bodyCushion replacement parts which include new foam and vinyl, and we offer Vinyl Replacement for customers who only need to replace the vinyl coverings on their bodyCushion™. We would love to hear your feedback and/or personal experiences with cleaning sticky vinyl as it helps us to continually improve our products and assist other customers.

Face Support Base Care & Cleaning Instructions

Avoid exposing the Face Support Base to sunlight as ABS plastics will degrade when exposed to UV light. Exposure to essential oils should also be avoided, as essential oils have also been known to degrade plastics.

To sanitize the plastic Face Support Base, use a germicidal solution that is approved for use on plastic. Do not use Armor All®, Formula 409®, Fantastik®, essential oils, baby wipes, or alcohol on our products. Consumer cleaning products are subject to change without notice to the consumer and may contain chemicals which could damage plastic. Should you desire to use other cleaning methods, carefully try them in an inconspicuous area to determine potential damage to the material. Never use harsh solvents or cleaners which are intended for industrial applications.
